As we kick off 2015 and get back to normality after the festive period you may have noticed the increased level of noise being made by our main political parties. Why? It’s election year.
They’ve already started telling us all about what a huge difference they’re going to make to our working lives if elected, and how they will, among other key issues, dramatically improve the economy of our great nation.
Let’s be honest, most of us are pretty sceptical of politicians at the best of times – from expenses outrages to other highly publicised scandals, it’s understandable. But it occurrs to me as we embark on a new business year, how much in common with them many of us have.
May I explain: as we all return from the holiday period many of us typically stand up and tell our families and friends what great things we are going to achieve in the year ahead (as well as whatever chosen vices we are planning to quit
)
As business owners we also return to the workplace and inform our staff of the impressive plans we have in store for the business and what a great journey it will be for them as employees of the company.
The problem, like many politicians in history can demonstrate, is the ability to actually deliver on all the promises we make to one another.
As the year unfolds we can all come up with reasons as to why things did or didn’t work out, and no doubt the leaders of political parties will have their list of ready-made excuses and the who’s who of who to blame when things don’t pan out as expected.
The owner/managed businesses of the UK (or ‘SME’s’ as most corporates and civil servants patronisingly continue to call us) are the lifeblood of our economy and have the ability to adapt at a moments notice.
The great news for us as business owners is that we generally have far less red tape and reliance on other people than the politicians have to endure. Sadly the bottom line which we all know is that ‘talk is cheap’, and it’s really only actions that count.
We wish you every success with your business and hope your 2015 ends up being the year you want it to be. If however, it fails to live up to expectation through not delivering your promises then the good news is you already know there may be an opportunity for a career change sometime in the future ![]()
