Do you have a queue of potential customers standing at the front door?
Wouldn’t it be nice to turn up on Monday morning at 8:30 and there’s a queue of potential customers standing on your doorstep, with their credit cards in the hands, all waiting to buy anything you create?
I know for a fact that for more than 99.99% of businesses, this thought will never turn into reality. I can’t think of many businesses where this does happen but it definitely happens for one technology leader… Apple!
I’m sure there are some amazingly talented and very clever people involved throughout the departments and divisions of that great business. Regardless of whether you’re a fan of Apple or not, most of us would be able to identify some reasons for their success, including:
- Great user experience
- Aspirational products
- Amazingly loyal customers
- Clever and relevant marketing
- Free ‘Genius sessions’ (one I only recently found out about ;-))
The list could be much, much longer however, they obviously go through a meticulous planning exercise before they roll out products and their marketing.
It may not happen in your business but I am absolutely convinced that there are still too many businesses out there that spend far too long thinking about how they can just sell their stuff, and nowhere near enough time finding out exactly what the customer actually wants to buy.
It may well be that you will never have a queue outside the door, but you can most certainly get customers who want to buy, if you do your homework! So good are Apple at the ‘desirability’ factor that they are probably already planning the next gizmo release that will trump any of your 8:30 starts, with some nutters even happy to stand outside Oxford Street at midnight !!
